Flying Scissors 3D Animation refers to a 3D animation of two pairs of scissors flying and trying to cut each other in the air, which appears in the closing credits of the 2010 Brazilian telenovela Ti Ti Ti. Starting in 2023, the animation has been used as a caption meme format and reaction to reference the sexual practice of scissoring among lesbian couples.

Origin

On July 16th, 2008, the Brazilian telenovela Ti Ti Ti, marketed globally as The Buzz, a remake of a 1985 telenovela of the same name, premiered.^[1] The telenovela follows the rivalry of two fashion designers. The closing credits of the telenovela, set to the song Ti Ti Ti by Rita Lee, include a series of 3D animations of various fashion industry and sewing paraphernalia, including a clip of two pairs of scissors fighting in the air^[2] (shown below, left; 00:32 mark). In the original telenovela, a similar animation is also used^[3] (shown below, right).

On March 4th, 2023, X^[4] user @vanslaeken posted the earliest discovered meme based on the clip from the closing credits, a sapphic joke about House of the Dragon characters Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) that gained over 60 reposts and 430 likes in one year (shown below).

Spread

The meme did not achieve significant spread until late June 2024. On June 27th, 2024, X^[5] user @alicentrist posted a similar meme about House of the Dragon during season two of the show that received over 3,100 reposts and 37,000 likes in two months (shown below).

The post was followed by other users on X / Twitter making similar memes about popular ships from various games and other franchises.

For example, on June 28th, 2024, X^[6] user @starksdorito made a meme about two drag queens from RuPaul's Drag Race, which received over 680 reposts and 8,500 likes in two months (shown below, left). On June 28th, X^[7] user @_lesvian made a post about the Caitvi ship from League of Legends that garnered over 2,500 reposts and 25,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
