Everyone Deserves Mercy or Most People Deserve Mercy refers to an exploitable Undertale meme format made up of three vertically stacked text boxes; the first, spoken by Papyrus, reads, "Everyone deserves mercy." The bottom panel reads, "Most people deserve mercy." The middle panel, attributed to Frisk, says something that makes Papyrus change his mind about the first statement. The format was first used on Reddit in August 2019.

Origin

On August 21st, 2019, Redditor lightiggy posted a meme to /r/Undertale^[1] using three stacked text panels. The top panel has Papyrus saying, "Everyone deserves mercy." In the second panel, Frisk says, "People ship you with your brother," referring to Sans. In the final panel, Papyrus has a shadow-covered face and says, "Most people deserve mercy." The post garnered over 3,600 upvotes in three years (shown below, left). On August 27th, Redditor Matt82233 posted a new version of the meme to /r/Undertale^[2] with the text in the center panel changed to read, "I didn't upvote a meme I liked," garnering over 1,400 upvotes in three years (shown below, right).

On August 29th, 2019, Redditor Abysswalker116 posted a new version of the meme to /r/ShitPostCrusaders^[3] referencing JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, garnering over 18,100 upvotes in three years (shown below). That day, an /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial^[4] user asked for the template. On November 7th, the Twitter^[5] account for mobile game BitLife posted a new version of the meme, garnering over 1,000 likes and 30 retweets in three years.

On June 12th, 2020, Redditor SonOf4Biscuit posted a version of the meme to /r/memes,^[6] garnering over 13,000 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On October 10th, 2021, Redditor Successful-Power433 posted a version of the meme to /r/Deltarune,^[7] garnering over 1,800 upvotes in a year (shown below, right). On October 2nd, 2022, Redditor AndrewTRM posted a blank template of the meme to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial.^[8]
