TikToker Felix Cipher is Hitler's Reincarnation Controversy

Overview

TikToker Felix Cipher is Hitler's Reincarnation Controversy refers to the cancelation of TikTok user Felix Cipher (@felix_cipher) who emphasized in his videos that he was Adolf Hitler reincarnated. The controversy started when Cipher was called out for wearing a Nazi medal (a Third Reich German eagle pin or aquila) on a Nazi-style uniform in a video where he was also showing off his new nose ring that looked like Hitler's mustache. When pressed on the matter, Cipher admitted that he believed that he was Hitler in a past life. In February 2023, the controversy spread from TikTok to Twitter as Cipher deleted his account and online presence. Before deletion, his videos earned multiple duets that emphasized backlash and also surfaced Felix Cipher's Facebook page where selfies of him that logged his gender transition from fem to trans man were found.

Background

TikToker felix_cipher began uploading content to TikTok sometime before February 2023. It is currently unknown the exact date of his first upload due to his account being self-deleted on February 6th, 2023. However, TikToks that tag him on the app date back to 2021.^[1]

Discourse about felix_cipher surfaced en masse on February 6th, 2023, when he posted a TikTok (since deleted) with text overlay reading, "I made a new nose ring!" In the video, felix_cipher showed off a new nose ring that was a large circle that went down to the top of his upper lip. He also showed his outfit which was a grey, Nazi-style uniform that had a Third Reich German aquila pin poked into it. Although the video has since been deleted, TikToker^[2] thetrueadventures posted a duet with the video, writing in the caption, "Your cosplay isn't cute. Grow up. #antisemitism #jewishtiktok #historymatters." The duet received roughly 615,100 plays and 88,900 likes in one day (shown below).

Online Reactions

After TikToker felix_cipher's aforementioned video went viral for negative reasons in early February 2023, he then posted a follow-up TikTok that addressed the angry commentators and dueters. TikToker felix_cipher basically stated that he was Hitler in a past life, claiming that when he was 5 years old he saw a vision of when he (as Hitler) killed himself via gunshot — pointing to what appears to be a birthmark on his head. The video has since been deleted, however, Twitter^[3] user daxdives reposted the video on February 7th, 2023, earning roughly 72,900 views and 7,000 likes in less than a day (shown below).

TikTok felix_cipher's follow-up video received increased engagement on TikTok as well as multiple duets. For instance, on February 7th, 2023, TikToker^[4] rumhamburger posted a reaction video that showed a separate fit pic of felix_cipher's, gaining roughly 381,900 plays and 74,700 likes in less than a day (since deleted). Later that day, TikToker^[5] dandydemon posted a video that used a sound from the Hitler episode of Epic Rap Battles of History, earning roughly 395,400 plays and 71,400 likes in less than a day (show below).
