Overview

Candace Owens "Hitler Was a Nationalist" Controversy refers to a series of remarks made by conservative activist and Turning Point Director of Communications Candace Owens about nationalism in regards to actions of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. When the comments resurfaced in February 2019, they sparked an online outrage against Owens, particularly due to the interpretation that her words that "Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine."

Background

On December 11th, 2018, Turning Point leaders Candace Owens and Charlie Kirk spoke at the RAC Club in London for the founding of Turning Point's United Kingdom chapter. Responding to a question, she discussed nationalism and in regards to Hitler. At which point, she seemed to imply that Hitler's mistake was that he globalized his beliefs, spreading them outside of Germany. Hitler was responsible for one history's largest genocides, accounting for the systematic murder of millions of Jews, homosexuals, people with disabilities and more.[1][2] She said:

"I actually don’t have any problems at all with the word ‘nationalism.' I think that the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don’t want… Whenever we say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. He was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine.

The problem is that he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German. Everybody to look a different way," she said. "To me, that’s not nationalism. In thinking about how we could go bad down the line, I don’t really have an issue with nationalism. I really don’t.
