Overview

The 2024 Hanteo Music Awards Poop Incident refers to an event in February 2024 in which a fan reportedly pooped in their pants in the middle of the 31st Hanteo Music Awards in Seoul, South Korea. Background

On February 18th, 2024, user @twitfordori, a fan who attended the 31st Hanteo Music Awards, shared on X^[1] that someone had supposedly "pooped in the standing area near the waiting area for the singers." The tweet (shown below, top) amassed over 5,000 likes and 13,000 retweets in a day.

Almost an hour later, X^[2] user @myuniverse802, who also attended the award show, posted a picture from inside the event saying people pointed out the odor in the audience and the security staff confirmed it was poop but "they say they can’t clean it up, they say there’s nothing they can do," the fans stated. The post (shown below, bottom) received more than 3,800 likes and 4,200 retweets in a day.

As of February 19th, 2024, the organizers of the Hanteo Music Awards had yet to comment on the incident.

Developments

A few hours after the event ended on February 18th, 2024, @Sunyeo511698Vip, the fan who allegedly pooped in their pants, posted an apology on X,^[3] saying, “Hello, I’m the person who pooped at the Hanteo Music Awards. After reading posts on Twitter, I realized that many people felt uncomfortable because of me. I’m so sorry for causing inconvenience and I will reflect on my mistake and the issue that happened earlier today. Once again, I’m sorry, and have a good day.” The tweet (shown below) received over 67,000 likes and 88,000 retweets in a day.

On February 19th, the KBIZoom^[4] website, which focuses on K-pop and other South Korean news, stated that the poop incident may be a hoax planned by @Sunyeo511698Vip, the fan who claimed to be the culprit.

One purported attendee of the event, X^[5] user @woongsrose, posted a thread claiming the rumor was false and the idols weren't reacting to a bad odor during the event but to watching fans falling right in front of them due to the pushing. The post (shown below) received roughly 3,000 likes and 722 retweets in a day.

Hanteo Music Awards Used Condom and Fight Incident

Attendees of the award show also claimed that they noticed used condoms in the trash can at the event. For example, X^[6] user @gelleis2 wrote that "there were people having sex in the standing area during ZEROBASEONE’s performance. There were condoms in the trash too. It’s a real mess. Is this an awards show or a toilet?” The tweet (shown below) received more than 1,000 likes and 1,700 retweets in a day.

Adding to the other incidents, footage and statements about the event reported that physical fights allegedly ensued between the supporters of Kim Ji Woong singer from the ZEROBASEONE K-pop group. X^[7] user @maechoz replied to a video showing the idol's reaction while the fight was ensuing (shown below), which garnered more than 4.8 million views and 16,000 likes in a day.
