End Of Evangelion Giant Rei refers to the gargantuan form that happens after Lilith fuses with Rei Ayanami in the anime movie End of Evangelion. The character, symbolizing the end of the Neon Genesis Evangelion plot, started to become the subject of memes in 2013, with it being used in both Redraw as well as Image Macros.

Origin

Released on July 19th, 1997, the End of Evangelion film's climax is the 'Human Instrumentality' activation, which causes the character Rei to fuse with Lilith and turn into a giant as the people of the Earth are violently turned into fluid together by her. On August 11th, 2020, the YouTuber Juvaiw^[1] uploaded the scene from the movie, commenting on how horrifying the screaming is and the larger impact of the scene in general, earning over 400,000 views in four years (shown below).

The scene of Rei clutching the red ball of fluid was later used as a redraw template, with people redrawing the scene by replacing Rei with something else that is considered terrifyingly world ending. On September 17th, 2013, the Tumblr user WalterWhitePrivelege^[2] uploaded the grandmother from Cookie Clicker as Rei, with her holding a giant cookie in place of the red ball (shown below).

This trend began to spread on Tumblr, with other artists also drawing their own redraws of the Giant Rei. On June 16th, 2015, the Tumblr user Kkreg^[3] uploaded a version of the scene in which they replaced Rei with a drawing of Asuka, with the event being called 'The Third Honking' instead of it's official name of 'The Third Impact', while showcasing comments from Facebook in which the event is called The Third Honking, causing the art piece to be an inside joke (shown below).

The following year, the scene was redrawn again, this time by a DeviantArt user named Anzhyra. In their post^[4], named 'The End of Gardengelion' the Giant Rei is instead changed out for a Gardevoir which is still seen clutching a red ball of liquid as The Third Impact is seen still commencing, earning the artist over 170 favorites in nine years (shown below).
