About
Donald Trump NFTs, also known as the Donald Trump Digital Trading Card Collection, is an NFT collection of 44,000 pieces of crypto art launched by former U.S. President Donald Trump in mid-December 2022 as a self-proclaimed "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT" on his Truth Social page. The news of Trump's NFT collection spread to Twitter soon after where viral memes and reactions surfaced en masse. All of the NFTs feature Trump in different settings and outfits such as an American football field, the wild west and the moon. The NFT collection sparked controversy as many viewed it as shady and deceptive akin to stigmas about the NFT market in general following the 2022 Crypto Crash.
Origin
On December 14th, 2022, Donald Trump posted a video to Truth Social[1] in which he said, "America needs a superhero." Then, a drawing of him with laser eyes in front of Trump Tower appeared, followed by an infographic that stated there was to be a major announcement on Thursday, December 15th. The post received roughly 65,300 likes in one day (shown below).
Then, on December 15th, 2022, Trump posted again to Truth Social,[2] writing, "MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT! My official Donald Trump Digital Trading Card collection is here!," hyperlinking to the website CollectTrumpCards.com[3] where people could buy Trump NFTs using ETH. After purchasing them for $99 USD each, the NFT owner was automatically eligible for Trump rewards and prizes that included a dinner for two at Trump tower, a dinner for two at Mar-a-Lago or simply just signed Trump memorabilia, among other prizes.[4] Trump's Truth Social post received roughly 11,000 likes in two hours (shown below).
