The Sad, Embarrassing History of the PLA and Why China Would Struggle Taking Taiwan

It goes very badly for the communists at first, but thanks to the Imperial Japanese army, the KMT gets bloodied, and the communists get almost a decade to recruit, rearm, and grow without engaging in any real hostilities. Thus after WWII is over, the KMT is barely standing and the nascent CCP attacks, driving the exhausted and depleted KMT forces out of China. By 1949, the KMT has been entirely kicked out of mainland China and their only remaining area is Taiwan. So in fall 1949, the CCP begins preparing PLA army group North for the largest amphibious operation in Chinese history. However, before they are ready, North Korea invades South Korea and precedes to get their asses kicked once the UN enters on the southern side. China then counter invades to make sure no "imperialist" forces stay on the Korean peninsula, no "imperialist" air bases are formed in range of the mainland, and that the Korean peninsula be unified under the communist flag to serve as a buffer territory. To ensure this happens they send their best and most trained army: PLA army group North. Needless to say the Korean War is a disaster of the PLA. No matter the reason, the fact that Mao enforced loyalty and foolhardiness over actual military competency leads directly to the Chinese experience in the Vietnam war, but first a brief detour into the Sino-Indian border "war". Here, Cambodia's Khmer Rouge had killed -30% of their own population and run out of people to plausibly blame for all their regimes failures. So they started abducting Vietnamese people from across the border to murder. Vietnam told they to knock that the f--- off, and the Khmer Rouge kept on going. So Vietnam invaded and proceeded to wipe out the Khmer Rouge and send Pol Pot fleeing. China had mutual defense pact with Cambodia, and came to their aid less they lose face. The PLA built up 450k troops on their border with Vietnam and Invaded. Defending Northern Vietnam were some reserve militias with ~40k troops, many women and elderly. The official Chinese goal is to march to Hanoi and Force the Vietnamese to withdraw from Cambodia, thus saving the Khmer Rouge. 3 Days into the war and a mere 5km into enemy territory and PLA supply lines are breaking, with frontline troops going without food and ammo for the rest of the duration of the war. (Yes the PLA had soldiers die of starvation in a three week war.) In the course of these three weeks, China fails to achieve the objectives they set for the first two days of the war, much less achieve the goal of marching into Hanoi itself. They further take 30k dead, many more wounded and captured. In this war we got to see Maoist fighting on the forefront. A PLA division was held up for 6 hours by a single platoon. The PLA soldiers marched shoulder to shoulder directly into a minefield and automatic gun fire. The division ended up taking a company worth dead, and three more crippled, while the Vietnamese platoon suffered a single twisted ankle. Without taking a single major objective after three weeks, getting BTFO by reserve militias the PLA turned tail and fled, from then on only threatening Vietnam, never actually attacking. The Vietnam war was their last combat experience, and it was a disaster of epic proportion. PLA, PLAN, PLAAF equipment across the board is completely different from what they used the last time they had combat. They have ZERO experience with it, and their doctrine for using it is a slapdash facsimile of what they see NATO do. But the problem is that they completely lack all the fine details required for NATO air-land battle combined arm tactics to be effective. For example the PLAAF puts an emphasis on dogfighting and effectively no focus on BVR tactics and operations. This can be seen when they trained with the Thai airfare, the PLAAF were crackerjack dogfighters easily besting the Thai airfare, but completely inept at BVR combat. This is a massive liability as it means most if not all the PLAAF fighters will be shot down before they ever get into what they consider to be actual combat. Beyond just their airfare training issues, their war games are still almost entirely scripted. When they do go off script, the PLA gets embarrassed every time. Come for a tank column trying to shoot down a squadron of attack helicopters, stay for a carrier group refusing to drop EMCON even as their fellow ships are being "hit" and killed by ASHMS. When they train with other nations they get embarrassed if the training isn't entirely scripted. Officers are required to spend 40% of their time studying communist party thought. This means compared to normal militaries, Chinese officers are vastly undertrained, and much more likely to blindly follow orders. In most militaries the squad is based around a light machine gun. For the PLA squad however are based around long range grenade launchers such as picrel, and every platoon has a PF-98 unguided 120mm recoils rocket launcher. The idea is that the squad uses the grenade launcher/modern version of the M20 super bazooka (from the Vietnam war) to kill threats, rather than using a LMG to suppress a threat. As of course a dead threat is better than a suppressed one. There are a couple of problems with this. First, the cartridge they use is 35x32, which is roughly half the size explosive as the M203's 40x46 cartridge. Second, tests on grenades showed that the 40x46 is pretty much the minimum effective round, any smaller and there is a high probability the target is not killed or incapacitated even if you get a round on target (ie close enough). Finally there is the problem of ammunition. The grenades take up significantly more volume than standard 7.62 rounds and so the PLA units will be going into battle with -1/10 the ammunition as the Taiwanese LMGS squads. What this means is that PLA soldiers will experience significantly more deaths and casualties than Taiwanese units, and the PLA soldiers will be unable to communicate effectively during battle. Finally when it comes to rifles you might think the PLA uses an AK or some derivative, but that is wrong. Their standard service rifle is the QBZ-95 bullpen. It is chambered in a special snowflake round, which is used by exactly zero other weapon systems, and has been shown to be underpowered and inaccurate (bullpups are naturally less accurate in combat due to the weight placement allowing for easy barrel movement) in export tests. Further the PLA has completely lost faith in it as it is replacing the rifle despite it only having 20 years of service. What are they replacing it with? Taiwan has a standing army of ~175k, and a surge of 2 million more. Thus it is highly likely that the PLA landing forces will be outnumbered, and surrounded. This means heavy casualties. Which brings up another major problem for the attacking PLA forces: medivac. As they PLA forces begin getting cut to shreds, they are faced with a stark choice: Do they reduce the rate at which they transport troops and materials to their beachheads, in order to ensure expedient medivac for their injured front lines troops, or do they let those troops die in order to bring in more fresh troops and supplies? The first option makes it more likely that the Taiwanese forces can throw the invading PLA troops into the sea, but reduces total PLA dead. The second dramatically increases PLA forces death rate, but increases the probability of a successful beach head. But this makes for an IFF cluster f--- for the PLAN and the PLAAF. Now we have hundreds of ships in theatre that do not have proper IFF, these ships will be mixed in with Taiwan's and the PLA will either not engage Taiwan's forces using BVR capabilities in which case Taiwan's navy will wreck havoc on the PLA forces, or the PLAN and PLAAF will have a shitstorm of friendly fire events at best, and at worst their missiles will primarily hit their own forces. Add on top of this the PLAAF fighters will mostly have <5 minutes time over target, and you are talking about the PLAAF pilots having to make snap decisions of firing on targets without solid IFF while actively trying to dodge the missiles headed their way. What about all their missiles? Well it turns out SRBMS, MRBMS, and cruise missiles are great for fixed targets, but terrible for moving targets that are transitory in nature, such as the forces counter attacking your beachhead. The best outcome of their use is to wipe the Taiwan central C3 and hope that this gives your initial landing forces sufficient time to establish themselves. The only problem is it is a several hour trip to land troops, and this will be seen long in advance, and Taiwan has practiced scenarios where their entire leadership structure is wiped out. The missiles can be used effectively to destroy Taiwan's infrastructure, but given that the PLA is on a time limit with an invasion, given their own oil supplies are targets, and they will most likely be blockaded by the USN, they have to complete the war in 2-3months, or they will be unable to continue the fight. In summary, the PLA would have to be dumber than a stump to actually try to invade Taiwan.

This is a massive liability as it means most if not all the PLAAF fighters will be shot down before they ever get into what they consider to be actual combat. Beyond just their airfare training issues, their war games are still almost entirely scripted. When they do go off script, the PLA gets embarrassed every time. Come for a tank column trying to shoot down a squadron of attack helicopters, stay for a carrier group refusing to drop EMCON even as their fellow ships are being "hit" and killed by ASHMS. In most militaries the squad is based around a light machine gun. For the PLA squad however are based around long range grenade launchers such as picrel, and every platoon has a PF-98 unguided 120mm recoils rocket launcher. The idea is that the squad uses the grenade launcher/modern version of the M20 super bazooka (from the Vietnam war) to kill threats, rather than using a LMG to suppress a threat. As of course a dead threat is better than a suppressed one. There are a couple of problems with this. First, the cartridge they use is 35x32, which is roughly half the size explosive as the M203's 40x46 cartridge. Second, tests on grenades showed that the 40x46 is pretty much the minimum effective round, any smaller and there is a high probability the target is not killed or incapacitated even if you get a round on target (ie close enough). Finally there is the problem of ammunition. The grenades take up significantly more volume than standard 7.62 rounds and so the PLA units will be going into battle with -1/10 the ammunition as the Taiwanese LMGS squads. It is chambered in a special snowflake round, which is used by exactly zero other weapon systems, and has been shown to be underpowered and inaccurate (bullpups are naturally less accurate in combat due to the weight placement allowing for easy barrel movement) in export tests. Which brings up another major problem for the attacking PLA forces: medivac. As they PLA forces begin getting cut to shreds, they are faced with a stark choice: Do they reduce the rate at which they transport troops and materials to their beachheads, in order to ensure expedient medivac for their injured front lines troops, or do they let those troops die in order to bring in more fresh troops and supplies? The first option makes it more likely that the Taiwanese forces can throw the invading PLA troops into the sea, but reduces total PLA dead. The second dramatically increases PLA forces death rate, but increases the probability of a successful beach head. The best outcome of their use is to wipe the Taiwan central C3 and hope that this gives your initial landing forces sufficient time to establish themselves. The only problem is it is a several hour trip to land troops, and this will be seen long in advance, and Taiwan has practiced scenarios where their entire leadership structure is wiped out. The missiles can be used effectively to destroy Taiwan's infrastructure, but given that the PLA is on a time limit with an invasion, given their own oil supplies are targets, and they will most likely be blockaded by the USN, they have to complete the war in 2-3months, or they will be unable to continue the fight. In summary, the PLA would have to be dumber than a stump to actually try to invade Taiwan.
