Chuck McGill Hits His Head, also known as Chuck McGill Faints and Chuck McGill Falls, refers to a scene from the Better Call Saul television series in which the character Chuck McGill has a meltdown and faints in a print shop, hitting his head on a table during the fall. The scene has been used in GIF and video caption memes and in edits.
Origin
On April 11th, 2016, episode nine "Nailed" of season two of the Better Call Saul drama series premiered.[1] In the episode, the character Chuck McGill arrives at a print shop to question a clerk about his brother Jimmy McGill on suspicion that Jimmy forged court documents. During the dialogue, Chuck becomes agitated as the clerk doesn't confirm his suspicions, and experiences an episode of the condition ("electromagnetic hypersensitivity") he believes he suffers from. Chuck faints and hits his head on a table during the fall (scene shown below).
On April 12th, 2022, Redditor TuVato posted a GIF of Chuck McGill fainting and hitting his head to gfycat[2] and /r/betterCallSaul[3] subreddit. Also that day, YouTuber[4] CrystalFissure posted a music remix titled "Better Call Saul – Chuck's Fall Song" based on the scene. The video gained over 35,700 views in six years.
Also on April 12th, 2016, Redditor[4] Leporad posted the earliest known humorous edit of the scene, a Grand Theft Auto Wasted meme which accumulated over 10,000 views on Imgur[5] in six years (shown below, left)
On April 13th, 2016, Redditor ThatDamnCow posted an edited version of the GIF in which Chuck bounces from table to table to /r/fuckchuck[11[ subreddit, where it gained over 570 upvotes in six years (shown below). On November 3rd, 2017, Redditor[6] Ternarian reposted the GIF to the /r/betterCallSaul subreddit where it gained over 660 upvotes in five years.
Spread
Prior to April 22nd, 2020, an unknown user posted the first GIF caption meme based on the scene, captioning the GIF of chuck falling and hitting his head, "White people when they try performing a simple task without lofi hip-hop" (shown below). On April 22nd, 2020, iFunny[7] user VaporWaveSpace made the earliest found repost of the meme. On August 24th that year, iFunny[8] user Cool_Guy27 made a repost that gained over 980 smiles on the app.
The GIF caption inspired more similar memes on iFunny and other platforms in the following years. For example, on August 27th, 2020, Instagram[9] user law_of_surprise posted a The Witcher version of the meme that gained over 1,300 likes in two years (shown below, left). On April 22nd, 2021, Redditor[10] Doomzonemegabomb posted a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure meme that gained over 2,200 upvotes in one year (shown below, right).
The GIF caption format maintained popularity in 2022, primarily in various meme subreddits. The looped version of the GIF also saw use in memes.
