#CDCSays is a hashtag that appeared on social media platform Mastodon in mid-February of 2024, in reaction to a CDC announcement regarding its CoVid-19 recommendations. It was used in many posts for parodic announcements, in which the CDC would react to a threat by acting in a completely ineffective or counterproductive way.

Origin

On February 13th, 2024, the CDC issued a proposition for a guideline reform^[1], suggesting to drop the five-day quarantine for workers who tested positive for CoVid-19, at the condition that they have mild and improving symptoms and that they have been fever-free for at least one full day. The revelation of this information was met with outrage by many Mastodon users, who interpreted this new guideline as compliance towards businesses, in spite of the CoVid-19 pandemic still happening and even recently creating new mortality peaks. In response, the hashtag #CDCSays was created to parody the CDC's perceived lack of care for health hazards in other settings, associating it with out-of-touch or hypocritical recommendations and advices.
