Delilah the cat was originally posted to Facebook group "Star Trek Shitpostings" by her owner, and group member Johnny J Martin Jr.

The original image included Johnny and Delilah sporting matching Star Trek cosplay uniforms with Johnny asking other group members if they also incorporated their pets into their cosplay.

Facebook user, and group member Corey Valentine took the image of Delilah and turned it into several meme postings with the hashtag #CaptainDelilah. The memes, and adorable kitty rapidly took hold within the group. Other members of the group of 95,000 began to add Captain Delilah to popular memes, creating web comic series and more. Captain Delilah become the pseudo unofficial mascot for the group. The love for Captain Delilah the 14 year old kitty cosplayer, lead to some users to declare April 15th "Captain Delilah Day".
