Melvin Herris, mostly known as Big Smoke, is one of the main characters of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the seventh installment the Grand Theft Auto video game series. The character is considered a fan favorite due to his personality and several lines that he says throughout the game.

Origin

Big Smoke is a high-ranking member of the Grove Street Families, he makes multiple references to his desire to be remembered after his death. He has a close relationship with the members of the gang and helps the main character Carl Johnson in several missions of the game.

Spread

Big Smoke popularity online can be dated back to 2010, when a YouTuber qwert50 uploaded a video titled “Follow the Damn Train CJ,”. Over the years, the video had gotten over 311,000 views.

The character got a large resurgence in popularity in 2016, when a Youtuber Jonm uploaded a video where it shows Big Smoke's moaning in slow during the initial cutscene of the first mission of the game, comparing it with the noise that of a Youtuber Customgrow420. On March 25, 2016, the Youtuber Pyrocynical used the video, which caused an even higher increase of popularity.

The overall interest about the character started when the Youtuber FlyingKitty uploaded a remix of the scene where Big Smoke Orders at in-universe Cluckin' Bell restaurant mixed with the song "Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang". Later the remixes with other songs were uploaded with each of them gaining over one million views.

Big Smoke Order is a memorable scene from the in-game mission "Drive-Thru", where Big Smoke makes an order at an in-universe fast restaurant Cluckin' Bell. It's memorability comes from the comically large length of the Big Smoke's order.

Big Smoke: Carl, what do you want? You gotta eat to keep your strength up, man.
CJ: Ey, I’ll take a number 9, fat boy.
Ryder: Give me a number 9, just like him.

"Aaaaaaaw" / Big Smoke's Moan

Big Smoke 'Moan refers to a noise uttered by Big Smoke during the first cutscene of the in-game mission "Big Smoke". The moan is part of the line "Aaaaw, My dawg, what's up?" and is referred to CJ when he recognized him, after he tried to hit him with a baseball bat.
