"Become One With Russia" is an expression referenced by fans of the character Russia (a.k.a. Ivan Braginski) from the Japanese webcomic and anime series Axis Powers Hetalia. The phrase is typically paired with fan art illustrations and animations of the character.
Origin
In the Japanese manga Axis Powers Hetalia released in 2006, the character Russia asserts that everyone will eventually "become one" with him while comforting the character China at a bar.[10]
Spread
On October 27th, 2009, DeviantArtist[2] Brittlander uploaded a digital illustration of the character Russia wearing a panda suit with the caption "You will all become one with Russia da?" (shown below, left). On November 4th, DeviantArtist[3] BailyDelRosa uploaded a drawing of several Axis Powers Hetalia characters above the caption "Become on with Russia Y/Y?" (shown below, right).
In Episode 42 of the Axis Powers Hetalia anime series, Russia's sister Belarus bangs on his door repeatedly while expressing that she wishes to "become one" with him (shown below).
On February 11th, 2010, a Facebook[1] page titled "Become one with Russia and Together We Will Conquer All!" was launched. On May 7th, YouTuber Michu Gotdangpichu uploaded a video titled "Russia's Adventure," in which the Google search engine is used to search a variety of keywords including "Become one with Russia? Y/Y" (shown below, left). On November 7th, 2011, YouTuber zoewoewoowoo uploaded a video titled "Become one with Mother Russia, da?", featuring a dancing animation of the character Russia with a Japanese pop song playing in the background (shown below, right).
As of March 2014, over 115 stories containing the phrase "become one with russia" have been submitted to the anime category on the fanfiction database FanFiction.net.[7]
Notable Examples
Images featuring the Axis Powers Hetalia reference are often shared on Tumblr[6] under the tag "#become one with russia." As of March 2014, there are over 51,000 submissions on DeviantArt[5] under the keyword "one with russia."
