About

88/12 refers to a revenue split between game developers and store for video games sold on digital distribution platform Epic Games Store. References to 88/12 revenue distribution gained popularity among the critics of the platform as a way to mock the store and its developer Epic Games due to the company CEO Tim Sweeney frequently highlighting the split as being more lucrative for the developers when compared to competitors.

Origin

On December 6th, 2018, video game developer Epic Games launched its digital distribution platform Epic Games Store.[1] The store offered a 88/12 percent revenue split for video game developers and the store, compared to 70/30 percent split offered by Epic Games Store's major competitior Steam.

Spread

In the following year, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney highlighted the split as more lucravtive than that offered by Steam and other competitiors on multiple occasions (several tweets shown below).[2][3][4][5]

Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic Replying to @Kellursa It's about lots of things. Bringing better 88/12 terms to developers, building a customer base, influencing the economics of all stores, and making a profit along the way. 11:58 AM 25 Mar 2019
Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic Why 12%? We chose this number to provide a super-competitive deal for partners while building profitable store business for Epic. an enduring and From that 12%, we net around 5% after direct costs and that could grow to 6-7% with greater economies of scale. 2:38 PM 22 Apr 2019
Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic Replying to @GV_Delchev @riggedforepic and 2 others If Steam committed to a permanent 88% revenue share for all developers and publishers without major strings attached, Epic would hastily organize a retreat from exclusives (while honoring our partner commitments) and consider putting our own games on Steam. 6:05 PM - 24 Apr 2019

Starting in late August 2019, referencing the revenue split has gained popularity among the critics of the platform, particularly in /r/fuckepic subreddit. For example, August 30th, 2019, post by Redditor thrundle gained over 1,400 upvotes in four weeks (shown below, top left).[6] A September 1st, 2019, post by Redditor gio5rgi gained over 1,500 upvotes in the same period (shown below, top center).[7]

Various Examples

Using 88/12 card again lol.... Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic Replying to @reidmain I think we'll see a lot of positive evolution in stores now that the shift is underway. Across all platforms, digital software stores are a $100,000,000,000 worldwide business. If store fees go down from 30% to 12%, stores will still be very profitable. 6:02 30 Aug 19 Twitter for iPhone
